Global geography has a significant role in the travel, tourism, and aviation sectors. Every professional should be familiar with global geography and be able to identify locations or cities using the IATA classifications, taking into account factors like area, nation, and subarea. The world may be split into the Eastern and Western Hemispheres, which are then further separated into three traffic conferences by IATA, which are then further separated into subareas. 

IATA divided the world into three Traffic Conferences which are as follows:

a. TC 1 composed of American and Atlantic countries:

  • North America:
    Canada, USA, Mexico, St. Pierre & Miquelon
  • Central America: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala Honduras and Nicaragua
  • Caribbean Sub area: Bahamas, Bermuda, Guyana, French Guiana, Surinam and the Caribbean
    Islands
  • South America:
    Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay
    and Venezuela

Sub areas of TC 1 is the Atlantic classification:

  • North Atlantic: Canada, Greenland, Mexico, USA, Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands
  • Mid Atlantic: Caribbean area, Central America and South America
  • South Atlantic: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay

b. TC 2 has all European countries plus the Russian provinces located west of Ural Mountains (6 Sub regions)

  • Central Africa:
    Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe
  • Eastern Africa:
    Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda. Somalia. Tanzania and
    Uganda
  • Southern Africa: Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Libya, South Africa and
    Swaziland
  • Indian Ocean Islands: Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mayrette, Reunion and Seychelles.
  • Western Africa:
    Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Congo Brazille, Congo
    Kinshasa, Cote d” lvoire, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Bissau,
    Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Sao Tome & Principe, Senegal,
    Sierra Leone, Togo.
  • Middle East Asia: Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Sultanate

c. TC 3 has entire Asian continent and neighboring Islands:

  • Southeast Asia: Brunei, Cambodia, China, Taipei, Hong Kong, Guam, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Kyrgyzstan, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, Philippines, Russia (East of Ural Mountains), Singapore, Tajikistan, Thailand, Timor Lieste and Turkmenistan.
  • South Asia: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka
  • Far East Asia: Japan, South Korea, North Korea
